His hand groped across the bed as though to assure himself that this and not his dream was reality. It was the scream of an animal, and the sheet ripped under his clawing fingers as he shuddered into wakefulness. You said you loved me-why haunt me, then? It was a boy's trick, I tell you. I only meant to silence you, to stop your eternal preaching. Sweat started out on his forehead and little animal sounds began to come from his throat then he began to talk, and I realized he was talking to his dream. His head moved restlessly, and he began to shift and murmur in the grip of some nightmare. Then, asT watched, a crease of tension marred his smooth brow. He looked almost like a boy, but there was nothing adolescent in the sprawled beauty of his naked body. HIS HEAD WAS PILLOWED ON MY HAIR, TRAPPING ME EVEN IN SLEEP. With that moment in mind, I was often disappointed with how needy Mulan is in this book. I will honestly tear up every time I watch the moment when Mulan is able to climb the post in the Disney movie it’s the moment she absolutely proves that she can do anything the men can do, no exceptions required. When I looked up the book, I did find that this is the eighth book in a series of retellings, so that helped me make sense of why Mulan was in this world, but it definitely still felt weird when reading it. It felt like the author was trying too hard to force Mulan’s story into a timeline and country that she preferred. Set in a different time and place, I was interested to see what Dickerson would do with Mulan's story.Įither make her European or set the story in Asia, but keeping Mulan Asian for the sake of the original story was awkward and uncomfortable at parts. I was really excited when Thomas Nelson sent me an ARC of Warrior Maiden, which is a retelling of Mulan's story. I've loved the story of Mulan since watching the Disney version as a child (I used to run around singing "Reflections" as if my life was as difficult as hers *groan*). O pinions expressed in this review are completely my own.* *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Thomas Nelson through NetGalley. 6/29/2023 0 Comments Black thorns rina kentOf particular note was the angst level - off the charts.īrief Summary of Black Thorns by Rina Kent eBookĪ lie turned into a nightmare. In the conclusion of Naomi and Sebastian’s story, events occurred in their adult life after several years apart, so the beauty of this storyline was a bit of new adult / high school enemies to lovers and adult romantic fiction. My experience of the pandemic was a difficult one (whose wasn’t?) and focusing on this story lifted my spirits. So I decided to use it to write this idea that had been clattering around in my head for a while – my own take on the story of Eros and Psyche. Then the pandemic happened, and I had nothing but time on my hands. When Madeline Miller’s Circe came out, suddenly I had a comp title. The longer answer is that I wrote a fanfic based on the myth in 2018, and gradually realized that I could do more with it. The short answer is that I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Why did you decide to do a retelling of Psyche and Eros’ love story? The fact that Psyche and Eros eventually won a happy ending for themselves, so rare in mythology and in real life, made me love the story even more. I was transfixed: here was a mythological woman who rescued herself and her beloved, who descended into the Underworld and lived to tell the tale, who took on a hero’s labors and triumphed over them all. I first encountered the myth of Eros and Psyche at summer camp as a child, when a counselor told it around the fire. 6/29/2023 0 Comments Sleep by Lynn BiederstadtBiedenstadt (The Eye of the Mind) catalogs the monster's bloodthirsty demand in gory detail. While Nora searches doggedly for a cure, Matt's destructive actions, and those of a 15-year-old victim in Nora's care, escalate in a terrifying manner. She undercovers other reports of such possession, in each case finding that the incubus forced its unwilling host to kill. Matt's gruff boss insists that he take the problem to Nora Summerland, a clinician who treats sleep disorders. When Sleep takes over, Matt never knows where he will awakenzipped into a body bag on the way to the morgue, staring at the torn, red-stained body of a rat, or standing next to a burning house (his own), a blaze set to cover the attempted murder of his girlfriend. Bad dreams rarely frighten Matt, until he finds himself ruled by Sleep, a demon within that releases a deeply buried blood thirst. Fearless photojournalist Matt Wicker earned a Pulitzer Prize for his daring picture of a firefighter engulfed by a wall of flame. 6/28/2023 0 Comments The dharma bumsTransitions are rather abrupt sometimes.” (Later, he saw it as something of a millstone, not only for Kerouac’s crude and overly-simplistic Buddhism, but also as a register of his own increasingly more complex identity)Īllen’s response to the book may be read here (from an article in the Village Voice, 1958 – more than a review, a full-out defense of Kerouac’s prose). “I do wish Jack had taken more trouble to smooth out dialogues, etc. Gary Snyder (Japhy Ryder, the pseudonymous hero of the book) originally responded positively (“( The) Dharma Bums is a beautiful book, & I am amazed & touched that you should say so many nice things about me because that period was for me really a great process of learning from you”), tho’, even then, expressed misgivings (to Philip Whalen) – Opening page of 1957 typescript manuscript of The Dharma Bums via Rollins College Archive 6/28/2023 0 Comments Caramelo sandra cisnerosAfter Cisneros graduated with her second degree, she returned to Chicago.
